Diane Kruger and director Fatih Akin have reunited for a new German period drama titled “Amrum,” which has started filming in Hamburg. The movie is set in a small village on Amrum Island in rural northern Germany in early 1945, during the final days of World War II.
The storyline of “Amrum” is inspired by the childhood memories of Hark Bohm, co-screenwriter of Akin’s previous film “In the Fade.” Initially, Bohm intended to direct the film himself but later passed the helm to Akin, who also co-wrote the screenplay for the movie.
The film follows the story of Nanning, a 12-year-old boy, and his best friend Hermann, as they navigate life in a tumultuous time. The cast includes Jasper Billerbeck, Kian Koppke, Laura Tonke, Diane Kruger, Matthias Schweighofer, Detlev Buck, and Lars Jessen.
Akin expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “Amrum is the journey of young Nanning, who in the last week of WWII uncovers a little more of the dark secret of his family every day until he is driven out of paradise at the end.”
The production of “Amrum” is a collaboration between Akin’s production company, bombero international, Warner Bros. Germany, and Rialto Film. The film is set to be released in German cinemas in September next year, with international sales rights acquired by Beta Cinema.
Diane Kruger, who previously won the Best Actress award at Cannes for her role in “In the Fade,” will star in the film. The success of their collaboration has led to discussions about potential new projects, including a TV mini-series about the life of Marlene Dietrich.
With filming underway and a stellar cast and crew on board, “Amrum” promises to be a compelling and poignant portrayal of a challenging period in history.
