Diljit Dosanjh, the popular singer and actor, recently shared his experience of playing the character of Amar Singh Chamkila in an upcoming Imtiaz Ali film. Dosanjh, known for his versatility in Punjabi and Hindi cinema, revealed that he had to “unlearn” certain things to portray the slain Punjabi musician on screen.
Chamkila, a legendary grassroots singer from the ’80s Punjab, was shot dead along with his singer-wife Amarjot in 1988. Dosanjh, who relied on Ali’s clear vision for the character, expressed how starting from zero as an actor was both challenging and rewarding.
The 40-year-old actor emphasized the importance of portraying Chamkila’s nuances accurately, as he was regarded as one of the best live-stage performers from Punjab. Dosanjh credited Ali for his meticulous preparation and guidance throughout the filming process.
The film, titled “Amar Singh Chamkila,” is set to premiere on Netflix on April 12. Produced by Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films, the movie aims to shed light on Chamkila’s life and legacy for both existing fans and newcomers.
Dosanjh believes that the audience will not only get to know the late musician better but also learn valuable lessons from his journey. With a mix of entertainment and historical significance, “Amar Singh Chamkila” promises to be a compelling watch for all viewers.
