Dinesh Karthik Explains Decision to Retire from IPL: ‘Could’ve Pushed for Another Cycle’

Dinesh Karthik, the veteran cricketer, bid adieu to his Indian Premier League (IPL) career as he announced his retirement from cricket. The 38-year-old, who recently played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru after a stint with Kolkata Knight Riders, played his final IPL match when Rajasthan Royals knocked RCB out of the playoffs.

Reflecting on his last game, Karthik shared his mixed emotions, saying, “It’s a tad bit emotional, a tad bit relief. I was mentally prepared for whenever it had to happen.” Having been a part of all IPL editions since 2008, representing six different franchises, Karthik leaves behind a legacy of 4,842 runs in 257 matches with 22 fifties.

When asked about the possibility of continuing his career, especially with the new Impact Sub rule in the IPL, Karthik expressed his physical readiness but cited mental challenges as a deciding factor. “Mentally pushing myself for so long in terms of doing everything in the lead-up, even if I falter a little bit I wouldn’t be… even though from the outside people wouldn’t know, but internally I would find it very hard and I would be living with guilt,” he explained.

Ultimately, Karthik made the tough decision to retire, considering factors like team expectations, family time, and the realization that he can no longer play for India. With a sense of closure, Karthik looks back on his illustrious IPL career with gratitude and looks forward to new beginnings post-retirement.
