Discovering the Magic of Picture Books: A Waterloo News Feature

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Renowned author and University of Waterloo alum, Dr. Jennifer Harris, has recently released her latest picture book, “The Keeper of Stars.” The book, which follows the story of a young boy named Milo who helps the Keeper of Stars clean up the sky every night, has already garnered critical acclaim as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection and a TD Summer Reading Club selection.

What makes this book even more special is the collaboration with illustrator Dorothy Leung, also a University of Waterloo alum. Harris notes that the pairing of author and illustrator was a happy coincidence, resulting in a book that is truly a joint effort. The whimsical illustrations by Leung bring the story to life in a way that Harris couldn’t have imagined.

Harris’s book is just one of many publications by faculty in the English department, expanding the offerings of the new Creative and Professional Writing major. She will also be teaching a special topics creative writing course on picture books, hoping to impart her knowledge and passion for the craft to students.

Despite the common misconception that writing a picture book is easy, Harris emphasizes the complexity and artistry involved in the process. From choosing the right language to cater to a young audience to incorporating challenging themes and concepts, writing a picture book is no simple task.

Harris encourages parents to support contemporary creators and explore the wide range of picture books available. Ultimately, she believes that children need books that spark their imagination, encourage playfulness, and convey hope.

“The Keeper of Stars” is now available in bookstores, with local launch events scheduled in Waterloo and Toronto. Join Dr. Jennifer Harris in celebrating the magic of storytelling and the power of picture books.
