Discovery World on Market in Parkersburg is teaming up with local businesses to provide free admission to active-duty military members, veterans, and their families. The interactive children’s museum is partnering with Jan Dils, Attorneys at Law, to offer free entry as a Blue Star Museum.
The Blue Star Museums program, a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the U.S. Department of Defense, will run from Armed Forces Day on May 18 to Labor Day on Sept. 2. Military personnel and their families can enjoy free access to Discovery World and other participating museums during this time.
Wendy Shriver, the executive director of Discovery World on Market, expressed excitement about the partnership with Jan Dils, Attorneys at Law. She highlighted the museum’s commitment to providing a fun and educational experience for military families.
Founder and CEO Jan Dils shared her delight in sponsoring free museum admission for military families, emphasizing the benefits of the museum’s exhibits for children. Veterans and their families can also take advantage of the free admission offer by presenting their credentials.
In addition to supporting military families, Discovery World on Market is also raising awareness about autism. The museum provides free sensory kits and hosts Sensitive Play Time for children with sensory needs or special accommodations. Matheny Motors is assisting in these efforts, with employees who have children on the autism spectrum.
Parkersburg Police Chief Matthew Board and Mayor Tom Joyce commended the museum’s initiatives, with Chief Board highlighting the department’s efforts to incorporate autism-specific training. Mayor Joyce expressed gratitude to Matheny Motors and Discovery World on Market for their commitment to the community, emphasizing the importance of organizations like these in making Parkersburg a special place.
