Djokovic Wins World Sportsman of the Year Award at Laureus Awards, Tennis Stars Shine

Novak Djokovic added another accolade to his illustrious career, winning his fifth Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award in Madrid on Monday night. The Serbian superstar equaled Roger Federer for the most Laureus Awards in the 25-year history of the event.

Djokovic, who was honored for his spectacular 2023 season that included three Grand Slam titles, received the award from former NFL star Tom Brady. In his acceptance speech, Djokovic praised the Laureus organization for using the power of sport to make a difference in the world.

The event also saw Rafael Nadal, the king of clay, being honored with the Laureus Sport for Good Award for his work with the Fundación Rafa Nadal. Nadal and his wife, Mery, have been dedicated to supporting more than 300 programs globally through their foundation.

Additionally, wheelchair tennis champion Diede de Groot made history by becoming the second wheelchair tennis star to win the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award. De Groot’s phenomenal 2023 season, which included a third successive calendar Grand Slam, earned her the prestigious award.

The night was filled with tennis stars shining bright, with Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz presenting the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year Award to Jude Bellingham. The event also saw Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur turning heads as the best-dressed couple, adding a touch of glamour to the star-studded evening.
