Doctor warns that this supposedly ‘healthy’ diet could negatively impact your sleep

Are you struggling to get a good night’s sleep? It might be time to rethink your salt intake. According to cardiovascular research scientist James DiNicolantonio, a low-salt diet could be the culprit behind your restless nights.

In a video shared on Instagram, DiNicolantonio explained that people on a low-salt diet may experience a worsening in their sleep due to the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which is a stress response that can affect sleep patterns. He cited several studies that showed consuming a low-salt diet of around 2,200 milligrams of sodium a day could lead to sodium depletion in the body.

When the body is low on sodium, it will start pulling sodium, magnesium, and calcium from the bones, which can have negative effects on overall health. This depletion of essential minerals can disrupt the body’s natural balance and lead to issues like poor sleep quality.

DiNicolantonio’s warning is supported by other medical experts who have highlighted the link between low sodium levels and poor sleep. An article in Ageist explained that when sodium levels drop in the body, the adrenals respond by producing more adrenaline to help with sodium retention. However, this increase in adrenaline can trigger the body’s fight-or-flight response, making it difficult to relax and fall asleep.

Additionally, low sodium levels can also lead to more frequent trips to the bathroom, especially during the night. When the body is low on sodium, it produces less antidiuretic hormone, which helps the body retain urine while sleeping. This imbalance can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to a restless night.

While it’s important to maintain a healthy balance of sodium in your diet, it’s equally crucial not to overdo it. The American Heart Association recommends consuming around 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, but the average American consumes much more at 3,400 milligrams. Diets high in sodium can have detrimental effects on health, including high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes.

So, if you’re struggling to get a good night’s sleep, it might be worth evaluating your salt intake. Finding the right balance of sodium in your diet could be the key to improving your sleep quality and overall well-being. Remember, a little salt might just be what you need to catch those Z’s.
