DOJ Approves $138.7M Settlement in Larry Nassar Case

DETROIT – The U.S. Justice Department has reached a $138.7 million settlement with over 100 individuals who accused the FBI of mishandling allegations of sexual assault against former sports doctor Larry Nassar. The settlement comes after a critical time gap in 2015 and 2016 allowed Nassar to continue preying on victims before his arrest.

This latest settlement, combined with others, brings the total compensation set aside for hundreds of women who were assaulted by Nassar to roughly $1 billion. Nassar, who worked at Michigan State University and served as a team doctor for USA Gymnastics, is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence for his crimes.

Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin Mizer emphasized that Nassar’s betrayal of trust should have been taken seriously from the beginning. The Justice Department’s acknowledgment of its failure to intervene sooner has led to this significant settlement to provide support for the victims.

FBI Director Christopher Wray expressed regret for the agency’s inaction, particularly in light of the knowledge agents had about the allegations against Nassar. The survivors, including Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, and McKayla Maroney, were let down by multiple parties, including the FBI.

The settlement marks a step towards accountability for Nassar’s actions, with survivors like Rachael Denhollander expressing gratitude for the long-awaited justice. Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics have also agreed to substantial settlements in response to the widespread abuse perpetrated by Nassar.
