Donald M. Leebern, Jr., a prominent figure in Georgia known for his larger-than-life personality and successful business ventures, passed away on April 27 at the age of 85. Born in Columbus, Leebern was remembered by friends and family as a man with a sharp memory and a penchant for pranks and jokes that were not fit for print.

Despite his jovial nature, Leebern was also known for his feisty side. In a memorable incident in 2006, he found himself in a physical altercation with a neighbor after a confrontation involving their dogs. The scuffle resulted in the neighbor being hospitalized with a broken nose and collapsed lung, but no charges were filed.

Beyond his personal life, Leebern made a significant impact in the business and political realms. As the president and chairman of Georgia Crown Distributing Co., he became a legend in the industry, known for his generosity and business acumen. He also dabbled in politics, donating to politicians of all stripes and even securing a bill in the Georgia General Assembly for one of his business ventures.

Leebern’s influence extended to the education sector as well, serving on the Board of Regents for nearly three decades and playing a key role in the appointment of UGA’s president. His dedication to philanthropy and education was evident in his support for scholarships and foundations that benefited students across Georgia.

A graveside service will be held on May 2 in Athens to honor Leebern’s life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the UCBC Cares Foundation. Leebern is survived by his wife, children, stepchildren, and grandchildren, leaving behind a lasting impact on his community and beyond.
