Republican White House hopeful Donald Trump sparked controversy on Saturday by comparing himself to South African anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela amidst ongoing legal trials. The 77-year-old billionaire real estate mogul is facing indictment in four criminal cases, one of which involves allegations of paying hush money to a porn star before the 2016 presidential election.

With a trial set to begin on April 15, Trump has been vocal in his criticism of Judge Juan Merchan, who has imposed a partial gag order on the former president. Trump took to his Truth Social platform to express his frustration, claiming his First Amendment rights were being violated.

In a bold statement, Trump declared, “If this Partisan Hack wants to put me in the ‘clink’ for speaking the open and obvious TRUTH, I will gladly become a Modern Day Nelson Mandela – It will be my GREAT HONOR.” This is not the first time Trump has likened himself to Mandela, having made similar comparisons at a rally in 2023.

The comparison drew swift backlash from President Joe Biden’s campaign team, who criticized Trump for his self-centered remarks. “Imagine being so self-centered that you compare yourself to Jesus Christ and Nelson Mandela all within the span of little more than a week: that’s Donald Trump for you,” Team Biden said in a statement.

As the legal battles continue to unfold, Trump’s controversial statements and comparisons to historical figures like Mandela and Jesus Christ are likely to keep him in the spotlight as he prepares for a potential run in the November election.
