Donald Trump is open to considering Ken Paxton for U.S. attorney general

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Former President Donald Trump has expressed his admiration for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, stating that he would consider appointing him as U.S. attorney general if he were to win a second term in the White House. Trump praised Paxton as a “very talented guy” and commended his work as Texas’ chief legal officer.

The close relationship between Trump and Paxton dates back to the former president’s time in office, with Paxton being a loyal ally who supported Trump in various legal battles, including challenging the results of the 2020 election. Trump even endorsed Paxton in the 2022 primary, helping him secure victory against three prominent GOP challengers.

Despite facing impeachment and allegations of accepting bribes and abusing his power, Paxton was acquitted in the Texas Senate, with Trump claiming credit for his intervention in the proceedings. Trump’s recent comments at the National Rifle Association’s annual convention in Dallas come amidst polls showing him leading President Joe Biden in key battleground states.

While Paxton’s political prospects have improved with the resolution of a long-standing securities fraud case and his impeachment acquittal, he still faces federal investigation and lawsuits related to his conduct as attorney general. Despite the legal challenges, Trump’s endorsement and support have bolstered Paxton’s standing in the political arena.

Trump has also mentioned Texas Governor Greg Abbott as a potential candidate for a high-profile position in his administration, hinting at Abbott being on his shortlist for vice presidential candidates. However, Abbott has downplayed his interest in the role, leaving room for speculation about the future political landscape in Texas.
