DP World Welcomes Maersk’s First Green Methanol-Powered Vessel at Jebel Ali Port
In a significant step towards achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions, DP World welcomed A.P. Moller – Maersk’s (Maersk) first large vessel that can run on green methanol for the very first time at Jebel Ali Port. The arrival of Ane Maersk marks a milestone in Maersk’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, as well as DP World’s efforts to decarbonize global trade.
Ane Maersk, serving the AE7 string that connects Asia and Europe, arrived in the UAE for the first time on her rotation, starting in Hamburg, Germany, and covering ports in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Gulf countries. After completing cargo operations in Dubai, the vessel will sail to ports in China, showcasing the global connectivity facilitated by Jebel Ali Port.
Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC, expressed pride in welcoming Ane Maersk to Jebel Ali, emphasizing the vessel’s role as a sustainability flagship in the industry. He highlighted DP World’s commitment to carbon reduction and the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in the supply chain to achieve net zero emissions.
Christopher Cook, Managing Director of Maersk UAE, Oman, and Qatar, described the arrival of Ane Maersk at Jebel Ali as a significant milestone in Maersk’s journey to decarbonize ocean transportation. He emphasized the need for collaboration across the ecosystem, including customers, partners, regulators, and infrastructure, to drive the green transition in the shipping industry.
Jebel Ali Port, the largest port in the Middle East and the 10th busiest in the world, serves as a vital global trade hub, connecting over 180 shipping lines and providing access to more than 3.5 billion consumers. The port’s role in facilitating sustainable shipping practices is crucial in achieving environmental goals.
Equipped with a state-of-the-art dual-fuel engine capable of running on green methanol, Ane Maersk is the first of 18 large vessels to be added to Maersk’s fleet by 2025. These vessels feature an innovative design with the bridge and accommodation placed at the front, allowing for increased cargo capacity and reduced consumption per container.
During Ane Maersk’s first call at Jebel Ali, Danish Consul-General in the UAE, H.E. Joakim Larsen, along with senior management of DP World and top customers and partners for Maersk, had the opportunity to tour the vessel. They received detailed information about the modern engine and innovative design, showcasing the advancements in sustainable shipping technology.
The arrival of Ane Maersk at Jebel Ali Port signifies a significant step towards a greener future for the shipping industry.
