DP World receives two new sustainability accolades – Business – Economy and Finance

DP World, a global leader in port operations, has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability at the 2024 SEAL Business Sustainability Awards. The company received two prestigious awards for its innovative environmental initiatives and sustainable practices.

One of the awards, the Environmental Initiative Award, was presented to DP World Santos for its groundbreaking re-use of waste material for energy. This initiative has allowed the port to achieve the remarkable feat of reusing 100% of the waste generated on site, reducing the need for landfill disposal. By adopting circular economy principles and smart design, DP World Santos has demonstrated its dedication to responsible waste management.

In addition to the Environmental Initiative Award, DP World was also honored with the SEAL Sustainable Innovation Award for its development of BOXBAY, a revolutionary automated high-bay storage container system. BOXBAY has the potential to transform the way containers are stacked, organized, and moved, significantly reducing carbon emissions at terminal facilities. This innovative technology showcases DP World’s commitment to revolutionizing container port logistics for greater efficiency and sustainability.

Since taking over operations at the Port of Santos in 2013, DP World has become Brazil’s leading multipurpose port operator, handling a diverse range of cargo including containers, cellulose, grains, and fertilizers. The port has implemented innovative initiatives such as the Aterro Zero project, which converts non-recyclable waste into sustainable energy for industrial activities, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.

The development of BOXBAY, in collaboration with German engineering specialists SMS group, has revolutionized container port logistics by increasing efficiency and reducing environmental impact. The system, piloted at Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port, utilizes automation and solar power to optimize container storage and handling processes, leading to a significant reduction in carbon emissions.
