The Maryland State Board of Education has made a significant decision by appointing Dr. Carey M. Wright as the next Maryland State Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Wright, who has been serving as the Interim State Superintendent of Schools since October 23, 2023, will officially begin her term on July 1.

The selection of Dr. Wright followed an extensive nationwide search process that began in October 2023. According to Search Committee Chair and State Board Vice President Dr. Joshua Michael, stakeholders emphasized the need for an experienced school leader with a proven track record of improving outcomes for children in Maryland. Dr. Wright, with her decades of experience as an educator in various Maryland counties and as the Chief Academic Officer in DC Public Schools, was deemed the ideal candidate for the position.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore expressed confidence in Dr. Wright’s ability to lead the state’s education system towards excellence. Under her leadership as Interim State Superintendent, the Maryland State Department of Education has already made significant strides in managing administrative transitions, improving math and literacy rates, and fostering relationships with key stakeholders.

Dr. Wright, who holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park, is committed to advancing literacy and mathematics for students at all levels. She believes that by preparing students for their chosen career pathways, Maryland’s public education system can undergo transformational change that will benefit current and future generations.

Dr. Wright’s full four-year term will commence on July 1, 2024, with an annual salary of $360,500. Her appointment signifies a new chapter in Maryland’s education system, with high hopes for continued progress and success under her leadership.
