In a groundbreaking move to address the long-standing issue of underrepresentation of women in medical research, President Joe Biden signed an executive order on March 18 to improve women’s health research across federal agencies. This directive aims to integrate women’s health into research efforts and drive new studies that focus on the unique physiological differences between men and women.

For years, medical research has predominantly focused on men, leading to incomplete and sometimes harmful medical advice for women. Dr. Stacy Sims, an exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist, has been at the forefront of advocating for gender-specific research to optimize women’s health outcomes. Dr. Sims highlighted the importance of strength training for women of all ages to reduce the risk of dementia and maintain optimal health. She also emphasized the impact of hormonal changes during menopause on body composition and the benefits of resistance training in preserving muscle mass and bone health.

In a candid conversation with CNN, Dr. Sims discussed the need for personalized exercise and nutrition recommendations for women based on their unique physiological differences. She emphasized the importance of protein intake, resistance training, and high-intensity workouts for women to achieve optimal health outcomes.
