Dubai is reeling from the aftermath of heavy rainfall that has left the city in a state of chaos for the past two days. The state-run WAM news agency described the rain as a “historic weather event” that exceeded any recorded data since 1949.

According to meteorological data from Dubai International Airport, the city received an unprecedented amount of rain between Monday and Tuesday, equivalent to a year and a half’s worth of rainfall. The downpour began on Monday, drenching the city with 20 millimetres of rain, and intensified on Tuesday, with over 142 millimetres of rainfall recorded by the end of the day.

The heavy rains have caused widespread disruption, with operations at Dubai Airport severely affected as the runway was flooded, leading to delays and cancellations of flights. Residents have been forced to abandon their vehicles as water levels rose, submerging cars in the flooded streets.

In response to the crisis, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has prioritized the safety and security of citizens, ordering the relocation of affected families to safe locations and directing a study of the country’s infrastructure. The government has extended remote work for government employees nationwide until Friday to ensure the well-being of its citizens.

Despite rumors of cloud seeding being the cause of the heavy rainfall, the National Center of Meteorology of UAE has refuted these claims, stating that no cloud seeding was conducted. Weather experts predict stability in the coming days, with a few cloudy days expected in Dubai.

The city is now focused on recovery efforts and ensuring the safety of its residents in the wake of this unprecedented weather event.
