Dubai Municipality Unveils Smart Marine Scraper to Combat Water Pollution

In a groundbreaking move towards environmental sustainability, Dubai Municipality has introduced a cutting-edge innovation – the smart marine scraper. This state-of-the-art technology is designed to collect floating waste in creek and water canals across the Emirate of Dubai, marking a significant advancement in the municipality’s commitment to preserving the environment.

Developed locally by Emirati talents in collaboration with Al Khattal Boat Factory, the smart marine scraper is operated remotely and can be controlled over an unlimited range. Real-time monitoring is facilitated through satellite technology, while a sophisticated control system utilizes 5G networks to execute precise marine maneuvers for efficient waste collection.

What sets this scraper apart is its secondary systems, including an intelligent marine survey system that identifies waste sites and initiates the removal process. Additionally, an interactive external environment system enhances marine safety by automatically preventing collisions. With enhanced productivity, the scraper can effectively collect and transfer up to 1,000 kilograms of floating marine waste.

The launch of the smart scraper underscores Dubai Municipality’s dedication to technological innovation and sustainable solutions that enhance the efficiency of municipal operations. This commitment aligns with the municipality’s objectives in integrated waste management, environmental beauty, sustainability, and pollution reduction, ensuring consistent public cleanliness throughout the Emirate and improving Dubai’s appeal, sustainability, and quality of living.

Dubai Municipality has allocated resources and capabilities towards providing integrated and efficient municipal services year-round. With a focus on curbing marine pollution caused by floating waste, the municipality has assembled a dedicated team to oversee the cleanliness of water canals and creeks spanning over 35 kilometers (19 nautical miles). This team consists of 12 marine captains, 25 workers and sailors, and 12 marine vehicles, committed to daily cleaning tasks and round-the-clock field follow-ups.

By introducing the smart marine scraper and implementing rigorous cleanliness measures, Dubai Municipality aims to safeguard the marine and natural environments of Dubai, ensuring a cleaner and healthier ecosystem for residents and visitors alike. This proactive approach towards environmental sustainability reflects the municipality’s unwavering commitment to preserving the beauty and integrity of Dubai’s waterways, setting a new standard for waste management and pollution control in the region.
