Dubai Takes Steps Towards Energy Efficiency in Buildings

In a joint effort to enhance the efficiency of energy and water use in buildings, the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE)’s Regulatory and Supervisory Bureau (RSB) for Electricity and Water, along with the Dubai Land Department’s Real Estate Regulatory Agency (RERA), organized a workshop attended by over 100 property owners, management companies, and service providers.

The workshop aimed to support the energy efficiency policy for joint ownership properties recently launched by RERA, with a focus on conserving energy and water consumption, enhancing their use, and ensuring optimal operations in buildings in the Emirate. This initiative not only supports resource consumption efficiency but also enhances the investment value of each real estate unit.

The collaboration between the DSCE and RERA reflects Dubai’s commitment to sustainability, aligning with the UAE President’s announcement to extend the ‘Year of Sustainability’ to 2024. The workshop emphasized the outcomes of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) hosted by the UAE, showcasing Dubai’s dedication to becoming a role model in green economy practices.

The workshop also introduced the Buildings Energy Management Accreditation Scheme (BEMAS), aimed at achieving operational sustainability in electricity and water consumption. This scheme serves as a catalyst for enhancing energy efficiency in buildings, supporting the Demand Side Management Strategy for energy in Dubai.

As Dubai continues its journey towards a more sustainable future, the cooperation between key stakeholders in the real estate sector sets the stage for a greener, more efficient built environment. Through initiatives like BEMAS and the energy efficiency management policy for joint ownership properties, Dubai is paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious real estate market.
