Dubai’s Busiest Airport Diverts Arrival Flights Due to Unprecedented Rainfall in a Single Day

Heavy rainfall in Dubai has caused major flooding in the city-state, with more than 120mm (4.7 inches) of rain soaking the area on Tuesday. Flights arriving into Dubai airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, have been temporarily diverted to other locations due to the flooding.

Homes and roads in Dubai were flooded, and partially submerged cars were left abandoned. The tarmac at Dubai airport was also flooded, resembling more of a lake than a runway. Airport operations were suspended for 25 minutes earlier in the day, with several flights cancelled and diverted to other airports.

The heavy rainfall in Dubai is unusual for the desert nation, with the typical yearly average being 120mm. Despite the disruption, departure flights from the airport are continuing to operate. Other parts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) also experienced heavy rainfall, with flooding reported in various areas.

The flooding in Dubai is a result of intense showers and thunderstorms affecting the region. The risk of further flooding remains high, with more rain expected in the coming hours. The situation is being closely monitored by authorities, with police and emergency personnel seen driving through flooded streets to assist with pumping away the water.

Neighboring countries like Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia also experienced rainfall, with at least 18 people reported dead in Oman due to heavy rain. The victims included schoolchildren and an adult who were swept away in a vehicle. The region is bracing for more rain and potential flooding in the coming days.
