Durham shines as a sports destination at Women’s Sports Summit

The Emerging Women in Sports Leadership Summit (EWSLS) held at the Durham Convention Center in late March drew a crowd of young women eager to make their mark in the sports industry. Co-hosted by the Durham Sports Commission (DSC) and Women Leaders in Sports, the summit provided a platform for networking and learning within the rapidly growing field.

Despite the low number of returning attendees, the presence of newcomers highlighted the increasing interest in women’s leadership in sports. Kaila’Shea Menendez, deputy director of the DSC, emphasized the importance of women in leadership roles in sports, citing the success of the Durham League, founded by a woman in 2016.

The summit featured presentations and “PowHer” talks, with speakers like Lindsey Harding, former Duke basketball star, and Nina King, vice president of Duke University Athletics, sharing their insights and experiences. The event also celebrated recent achievements in women’s sports, such as Erin Matson, the youngest collegiate head coach to win an NCAA title.

The summit’s focus on empowering women in sports aligns with the broader movement towards gender equality and inclusivity in the industry. With sessions on motivation and communication strategies, attendees were equipped with valuable knowledge and networking opportunities to advance their careers in sports.
