As Vision Health Month 2024 comes to a close, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) has released a survey shedding light on Canadians’ awareness and concerns regarding vision health. The survey revealed that while a majority of respondents were familiar with common eye conditions like cataracts and glaucoma, many Canadians still face challenges in prioritizing their eye health.

According to the survey, 71% of Canadians have experienced symptoms related to their eyes or vision in the past two years. This highlights the importance of proactive care and regular eye exams in maintaining good vision health. Dr. Phil Hooper, president of the COS, emphasized the need for continued education to ensure that Canadians are taking the necessary steps to protect their eyesight.

One key takeaway from the survey is the importance of undergoing regular eye exams. Despite the benefits of early detection and treatment of eye conditions, only 35% of Canadians schedule eye exams on a regular basis. Health Canada recommends that adults get an eye exam at least once every two years, while children and seniors should have annual checkups to monitor their eye health.

In addition to regular eye exams, wearing sunglasses with UV protection is crucial in preventing eye damage from harmful UV rays. The COS advises Canadians to wear sunglasses year-round, as prolonged exposure to UV rays can increase the risk of developing cataracts and other eye conditions. Brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley offer stylish frames with 100% UV protection, while more affordable options can be found online at retailers like Clearly.

Another important aspect of maintaining good vision health is protecting your eyes from blue light, especially as Canadians spend an average of nearly 11 hours per day looking at screens. Blue light exposure can lead to digital eye strain and affect sleep quality. To combat these effects, wearing blue light glasses or using apps that block blue light on digital devices can help reduce eye strain and improve overall eye health.

Furthermore, incorporating eye-healthy foods rich in vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, and omega-3 fatty acids into your diet can help prevent age-related vision problems like macular degeneration and cataracts. Foods like leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, nuts, seeds, and fish are excellent sources of these nutrients, while colorful fruits and vegetables provide antioxidants to protect the eyes from oxidative stress.

By following these practical tips and making small lifestyle changes, Canadians can take significant steps towards maintaining optimal vision health. Prioritizing eye health doesn’t have to be complicated, and with the right knowledge and habits, individuals can ensure clear and healthy vision for years to come. As the COS survey highlights, taking proactive measures today can make a difference in preventing future vision problems and preserving eyesight for the long term.
