Economists say Canada’s increase in capital gains tax is a setback for productivity

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland delivered a federal budget on Tuesday that has sparked controversy and concern among economists and business leaders. The budget aims to keep the deficit capped at $40 billion but introduces new taxes that are causing a stir in the economic community.

The budget includes an increase in the inclusion rate to 66 percent on capital gains above $250,000 for individuals and on all capital gains for corporations and trusts. This change is expected to generate an additional $19.4 billion over four years.

Business leaders, such as Jessica Brandon-Jepp from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, criticized the budget for adding to the burden on businesses without providing a clear plan for promoting productivity and economic growth.
