EdNews honored for excellence in journalism

Idaho Education News made headlines this weekend as they clinched an impressive 16 awards at the Idaho Press Club’s annual contest. The awards ceremony, held in Boise, recognized the outstanding journalism produced by EdNews in 2023.

Among the accolades received by EdNews were seven first place honors in categories such as reporting, photography, podcasting, data analysis, and reader engagement. The nonprofit news organization is dedicated to providing independent and comprehensive coverage of public education policy and practice in Idaho.

One of the standout achievements was reporter Kevin Richert’s coverage of a tumultuous year at the University of Idaho, which earned him top honors in Education and Special Purpose reporting. Richert’s in-depth reporting shed light on the challenges faced by the university community, including the tragic deaths of four students and controversial decisions made by university officials.

Additionally, reporter Carly Flandro’s series “Still Here: Tribes fight to be seen in Idaho” won first place for Special Coverage, highlighting the lack of Native American representation in Idaho schools. Darren Svan’s photography also received recognition, with his powerful image of a mother testifying on behalf of her autistic son earning him first place in Spot News Photography.

The awards also extended to former EdNews reporter Sadie Dittenber, who won the Media Innovation Award for her innovative project tracking the first 100 days of state superintendent Debbie Critchfield’s tenure.

Overall, EdNews’ success at the Idaho Press Club’s contest is a testament to the organization’s commitment to producing high-quality journalism that informs and engages the community.
