Edonia secures €2 million to develop microalgae into a more palatable ground meat substitute

Paris-based startup Edonia is making waves in the food industry with its innovative approach to creating protein ingredients using microalgae. With the world’s population continuing to grow, the need for sustainable and nutritious food sources is more important than ever.

Edonia, led by CEO Hugo Valentin, has secured €2 million ($2.1 million) in funding to further develop its plant-based ingredients made from microalgae biomass. Valentin claims that these ingredients are more nutritious than meat, offering a viable alternative for those looking to reduce their meat consumption.

The company’s unique microalgae transformation process, known as “edonization,” results in a textured super ingredient with a rich flavor profile similar to meat. This innovative technique not only enhances the taste and texture of the microalgae but also improves its nutritional and environmental qualities.

Edonia’s first product, Edo-1, offers an umami-like flavor and a texture comparable to ground meat, making it an ideal plant-based replacement for traditional meat products. With 30% protein content and essential amino acids, Edo-1 provides a nutritious alternative to meat while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Valentin’s vision for Edonia includes scaling up production to deliver thousands of tons of the product to the market. The company is already working with food manufacturers to develop recipes and food products using Edonia’s ingredients, with plans to launch commercially by the end of the year.

With the support of French venture capital firm Asterion Ventures and BPI, Edonia is well-positioned to revolutionize the food industry with its sustainable and nutritious microalgae-based products. As the company continues to expand its reach, Valentin aims to bring Edo-1 to markets across Europe, Asia, and the United States through strategic partnerships.
