Northeast Nebraska Educational Partnership Enhances Learning Opportunities and Workforce Development

A groundbreaking educational partnership in Northeast Nebraska, which includes the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is revolutionizing strategies to boost students’ learning opportunities and strengthen ties with private-sector companies in the agricultural and natural resources fields.

Representatives from member institutions gathered on March 19 for the compact’s annual planning summit at Northeast Community College in Norfolk. With twenty-one school districts, higher education institutions, and three educational service units participating, the compact aims to bridge the gap between education and industry.

One of the key focuses of the summit was to enhance communication with private-sector companies to introduce students to career possibilities early on and maximize apprenticeships and other opportunities. By collaborating with industry leaders, educational institutions can ensure that their programs align with the needs of the workforce.

Tara Smydra, dean of science, technology, agriculture, and mathematics at Northeast Community College, emphasized the importance of providing clear pathways for students to explore various career interests and instructional needs. The compact serves as a vital link between schools and employers to meet the diverse needs of students.

Ron Loggins, dean of Wayne State College’s School of Science, Health, and Criminal Justice, highlighted the role of the compact in adjusting instructional offerings and accreditation processes to meet industry demands and cultivate a sustainable talent pipeline.

The Northeast Nebraska Agricultural Science and Natural Resources Education Compact, established in 2019 and expanded in 2022, is the first regional educational partnership of its kind in the state. Led by Tammy Mittelstet, the compact’s conference featured discussions on teacher and student pathways, workforce development, and experiential learning opportunities.

With a focus on enhancing teacher and student experiences, the compact aims to provide support through curriculum resources, school activities, and field trips. The expansion of membership to include additional educational service units and school districts demonstrates the growing impact and success of this innovative initiative in Northeast Nebraska.
