More than 40 education majors from Commonwealth University recently had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the public education system through a collaborative project with the Williamsport Area School District. The Field Day experience, funded by a $9,000 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion mini grant, aimed to promote “Sweetening the Teaching Experience” and build partnerships with local schools.

Students from CU’s Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield locations were matched with teachers in elementary, mid-level, and secondary education at various schools within the district. They spent the day observing and interacting with teachers and students, gaining valuable insights into the teaching profession.

Dr. Priya Poehner, professor of education at CU-Lock Haven, highlighted the importance of this hands-on experience, stating, “This collaborative project provides students from all CU campuses the opportunity to observe and be mentored by master teachers in the K-12 district classrooms.”

One student, Ron Timko, a CU-Lock Haven secondary education major, expressed the significance of the Field Day, calling it the most important activity of his semester. He emphasized how the experience bridged the gap between theory and practice, making a lasting impact on his academic career.

Participating CU students, including Emily Smeal, Bailee Fox, and Isaiah Williams, among others, had the chance to learn from seasoned educators and gain practical skills that will benefit them in their future teaching careers. The Field Day not only provided valuable insights but also fostered meaningful connections between the university and the local school community.
