The Educational Broadcasting Commission in West Virginia is facing changes in management following the signing of Senate Bill 844 by Gov. Jim Justice. The bill redesignates the Educational Broadcasting Authority as the Educational Broadcasting Commission, with a reduction in board members and changes in the selection process for the executive director of West Virginia Public Broadcasting (WVPB).

During a recent meeting, the EBC unanimously recommended Eddie Isom, the current interim executive director of WVPB, to be the next permanent executive director. However, the final decision lies with Randall Reid-Smith, the cabinet secretary of the Department of Arts, Culture, and History. Isom, who has been with WVPB since 1996, was set to retire but may continue in his role.

Despite concerns about potential political interference and the impact on donations, leaders of the EBC and the West Virginia Public Broadcasting Foundation remain optimistic about the future of public broadcasting in the state. They believe that the changes present an opportunity for growth and expansion of influence.

With a significant portion of WVPB’s funding coming from state tax dollars, federal sources, and private donations, maintaining support from the Legislature and donors is crucial for the organization’s continued success.
