Egypt Threatens to Withdraw as Mediator in Gaza Ceasefire Talks

In a shocking turn of events, Egypt has threatened to withdraw as a mediator in Gaza ceasefire negotiations after CNN reported that Egyptian intelligence altered the terms of a recent truce proposal, ultimately sabotaging the deal.

Diaa Rashwan, head of Egypt’s State Information Service, issued a stern warning in response to the allegations, stating that any attempts to undermine Egypt’s mediation efforts will only serve to complicate the situation in Gaza and the entire region. He further warned that such actions may force Egypt to completely withdraw from its role as a mediator in the current conflict.

According to CNN, Egyptian intelligence made changes to a ceasefire proposal that Israel had previously agreed to in May. This alteration caused confusion and anger among U.S., Israeli, and Qatari officials, leading to a deadlock in the negotiations.

Rashwan emphasized that Egypt’s involvement as a mediator was at the request of Israel and the U.S., and recent accusations of bias towards Egyptian and Qatari mediators are unfounded.

Tensions have been escalating between Egypt and Israel, particularly over the Israeli military operation in Rafah near the Gaza-Egypt border. Egypt has expressed concerns that the conflict between Israel and Hamas could spill over into its territory, prompting increased security measures along its border.

As the situation continues to unfold, the future of ceasefire negotiations in Gaza remains uncertain, with Egypt’s role as a mediator hanging in the balance.
