Elkins Track Teams Compete at Philip Barbour Meet

PHILIPPI — The Elkins boys and girls track teams had a strong showing at the recent meet at Philip Barbour, finishing fourth out of seven teams. The Philip Barbour boys and Grafton girls took home the team titles, while Tygarts Valley boys placed sixth and the Lady Bulldogs finished in seventh.

The EHS girls had an impressive performance, with the 4×400 relay team (Emilia Tenney, Elizabeth Jones, Julia Biola, and Ziah George) and the 4×800 relay team (Biola, Mallory Bennett, Delia White, and Tenney) both finishing in first place. Additionally, the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams secured second place finishes. Jones also excelled individually, taking first in the high jump, while Caroline Simmons placed third in the shot put.

On the boys side, Trevor George stood out with a first-place finish in the 1,600-meter run. The 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams both finished in second place. In the 800-meter run, George placed second, with Gavin Brown and Bobby Valentine following in third and fourth place, respectively.

EHS boys coach Shane Richardson expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “We had a very good night for our first meet of the season. We continue to get better each and every day and we are on pace to be where we need to be moving forward.”

The Elkins track teams will have another opportunity to showcase their skills at the upcoming Irwin Invitational on Friday, April 12, at home. Field events are set to begin at 4:30 p.m. with track events following at 5 p.m.
