Elkins and Philip Barbour face off in Class AA competition | News, Sports, Jobs

The Elkins High School track and field team had an impressive showing at the state meet held at Laidley Field in Charleston over the weekend. The boys’ team finished 11th overall, with standout performances from several athletes.

Nate Hulver of Philip Barbour placed second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 200, while Elkins’ Caleb Ray finished fourth in the 200. In the distance events, Trevor George, Johnathan Dean, and Ben Tenney placed in the top 11 in the 800 meters, with George also finishing fifth in the 1,600.

The highlight of the meet for Elkins was the 4×800 relay team, consisting of Josh Bodkins, Trevor George, Ben Tenney, Johnathan Dean, and alternate Bobby Valentine, who finished second with a time of 8:21.03.

In the field events, PB’s Webster placed ninth in the high jump, while Keaton McDermott and Nick Tustin had strong showings in the shot put. The team effort was enough to earn Elkins 22 points and a respectable 11th place finish in the team standings.

Coach Shane Richardson expressed pride in his team’s performance, stating, “Our athletes proved we can compete with the best and bring home some medals.”

In the girls’ events, Emilia Tenney led the Lady Tigers with third-place finishes in the 1,600 and 800 meters. The 4×800 relay team also had a strong showing, finishing fifth in their event.

Overall, it was a successful weekend for the Elkins track and field team, with both the boys and girls demonstrating their talent and determination on the state stage.
