Elon’s School of Health Sciences Interprofessional Simulation Center Achieves Full Accreditation

Elon University’s School of Health Sciences Interprofessional Simulation Center (IPSC) has recently been granted full accreditation by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare on May 17, 2024. The accreditation specifically recognizes the center’s excellence in the area of Teaching/Education.

Led by Director Nita Skillman, the IPSC team, which includes Simulation Coordinator Bethany Fearnow and Simulation Specialist Angel Hernandez, has worked tirelessly to meet the rigorous standards set by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Both Skillman and Fearnow hold certifications as Healthcare Educators from the prestigious organization.

The accreditation process involved a thorough evaluation of the center’s programmatic policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with the best practices in simulation education. The IPSC primarily serves educational disciplines such as physician assistant, physical therapy, and nursing.

During a site visit on April 15, representatives from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare conducted a comprehensive review of the center’s operations, competencies, and educational activities. The visitors commended the IPSC for its commitment to the safety and well-being of learners and standardized patients during simulation exercises.

With the accreditation in Teaching/Education, the IPSC joins a select group of simulation centers in North Carolina to receive this recognition. The achievement not only signifies the center’s dedication to excellence in simulation education but also elevates its national profile, attracting learners, faculty, and funding opportunities.

The IPSC’s diverse range of simulation modalities, including standardized patients, task trainers, and medical mannequins, allows students to experience real-world scenarios in a controlled environment. By meeting the stringent criteria set by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, the IPSC has demonstrated its commitment to providing high-quality education and training in healthcare simulation.
