Condé Nast Workers Placed in “Purgatory” Amid Contract Negotiations

For the approximately 100 workers who recently joined Condé Nast’s “central editorial group,” their work environment has taken a strange turn in recent months.

In November, 94 Condé Union staffers were informed that they were slated to be laid off as part of a company-wide cost-cutting initiative. However, due to the absence of a finalized contract with the NewsGuild of New York-affiliated union, the layoffs were put on hold, leaving employees in a state of uncertainty.

As negotiations dragged on, Condé Nast began transferring individuals on the layoff list to a centralized team working across various brands. This group, referred to internally as the “central editorial group,” now consists of 95 members, with tasks ranging from writing summaries of past coverage to creating profiles of public figures.

Former prestigious writers and editors are now working on mundane tasks, such as summarizing coverage of female film directors and creating profiles of notable figures like chefs and politicians. Morale within the group varies, with some feeling insulted and others grateful for the stability amidst a challenging media job market.

The ongoing labor negotiations between the union and the company have led to a stalemate, with both sides accusing the other of bad-faith bargaining. The workers in the centralized group are left in limbo, unsure of their future as they await the outcome of the negotiations.
