The Bronx Community College hosted the 46th Annual “Run the Bronx” event on Saturday, May 4, in an effort to improve the health outcomes of Bronx children and their families. With The Bronx ranking last in overall good health among New York State counties, the event aimed to promote fitness and wellness in the borough.

The event featured 10K and 5K runs, as well as a 2-mile family fitness walk, with over 2,000 participants from the Bronx, New York State, and around the world. International participants from Poland, France, England, and the Dominican Republic joined in, along with local children, parents, students, and residents.

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson highlighted measures taken to improve health outcomes for Bronxites in her recent State of the Borough address. The event also celebrated the beauty of the Bronx Community College campus and surrounding areas.

The race, co-founded in 1978 by the late Bronx Community College President Roscoe C. Brown Jr., is the 2nd oldest footrace in NYC. Awards were presented to participants in various categories and age groups, with the men’s race won by Slawek Galeza and the women’s race won by Sammie Howe.

Elected officials, including City Councilwoman Pierina Sanchez and State Sen. Robert Jackson, were in attendance to support the event. The race routes showcased landmarks like the Grand Concourse, and a new feature this year was the PeeWee Pavilion for children.

Overall, the “Run the Bronx” event brought together the community to promote health, fitness, and wellness in the borough, emphasizing the importance of staying active and supporting each other in achieving better health outcomes.
