NNEGC Energoatom and the U.S. company Westinghouse have joined forces to embark on a groundbreaking project to construct KhNPP-5 and KhNPP-6 using AP1000 technology. The official launch ceremony of the project took place on April 11 at the Khmelnytsky nuclear power plant site, with key figures such as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Haluschenko in attendance.

Deputy Chairman of the Board of Energoatom, Petro Kotin, highlighted the advanced features of the AP1000 reactor, emphasizing its fully passive safety systems, modular design, and industry-leading performance characteristics. Kotin expressed optimism about the project, stating that it represents a significant step towards a more modern, reliable, and safe energy sector in Ukraine.

President and CEO of Westinghouse Electric Company, Patrick Fragman, commended Ukraine for its forward-thinking approach in adopting this improved technology. Fragman noted that the AP1000 reactor offers increased efficiency and cost-effectiveness compared to other options in the market.

The construction timeline is expected to be expedited, with heavy equipment already prepared at the site. Fragman mentioned that the assistance of the U.S. government and the signing of key agreements will further accelerate the project. The AP1000 reactor is designed to operate for 60 years, with potential for even longer service life.

The financing for the project is a crucial aspect, with Energoatom considering utilizing its profits or seeking loans to cover the costs. The construction period for one block is estimated to be four to five years, with a cost of approximately $5 billion. The project signifies a significant milestone in Ukraine’s energy sector, with the potential to enhance the country’s energy security and efficiency.
