Enhancing Business Services in North Vancouver District

The District of North Vancouver is taking steps to address the challenges faced by businesses in the area with the approval of a new economic development strategy. High rents, limited commercial space, and transit options have made it difficult for businesses to thrive in the district.

The strategy, which was unanimously approved by the council, includes an estimated $230,000 in new annual funding to implement various objectives over the next five years. These priorities were identified through consultation with companies by the district’s business task force and discussed in a workshop with district staff.

One of the key priorities is preserving employment space, as the district is expected to see significant growth in job opportunities over the next few decades. To accommodate this growth, the district plans to encourage more first-floor retail in mixed-use developments and introduce second-storey offices along transit-oriented corridors. Additionally, major industrial sites will be protected from subdivision to ensure the availability of employment space.

Improving business services is another focus of the strategy, with plans to establish a one-stop business concierge service and create an online portal for licensing and permitting. The district also aims to support transportation and housing for employees and enhance public spaces to create a more vibrant community.

Council members emphasized the importance of rapid transit to the North Shore as a potential game-changer for the district’s economy. By addressing these priorities, the District of North Vancouver hopes to create a more business-friendly environment and foster economic growth in the region.
