Entertainment News: Academy Announces Rule Changes for 2025 Oscars Ceremony

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced significant changes for the 2025 Oscars ceremony, aiming to adapt to the evolving landscape of the film industry while maintaining the integrity and prestige of the awards.

One of the key changes is the revision of eligibility criteria for films, with a focus on bolstering traditional movie theatres. Films must now screen for at least one week in select metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas-Fort Worth. Additionally, films must meet expanded theatrical standards in multiple US markets and international territories.

In an interesting development, animated feature films submitted by foreign countries can now be considered for both the animated feature and international feature categories, provided they meet eligibility requirements.

Composers are also set to benefit from the changes, with the best original score category now featuring a shortlist of 20 titles instead of 15. Up to three composers can now receive individual statuettes for their contributions to a score.

The Academy has also updated campaign promotional regulations and made modifications to special awards presented during the Governors Awards ceremony. The Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award will now be in the form of an Oscar statuette, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award has been redefined to honor humanitarian efforts promoting human welfare and addressing inequities.
