A rare copy of the original Superman comic, Action Comics No. 1, has made history by selling for a whopping US$6 million (S$8.1 million). This iconic issue, which introduced the world to the DC Comics superhero in 1938, has now surpassed the previous record set by Superman No. 1, which was auctioned off for US$5.3 million in 2022.

Heritage Auctions Vice President Barry Sandoval expressed his excitement about the sale, stating, “Without Superman and Action Comics No. 1, who knows whether there ever would have been a Golden Age of comics — or if the medium would have become what it is today.” The comic book in question features Superman showcasing his superhuman strength by lifting a car, a classic moment that has captivated fans for decades.

With only 78 known copies of this issue still in existence, the one sold at the recent auction stood out for its exceptional condition, graded at 8.5 and marked as “very good.” This distinction further contributed to its record-breaking sale price.

The auction of vintage comic books will continue until April 7, offering a wide range of collectibles for enthusiasts. Highlights include Iron Man’s first appearance in Tales of Suspense #39, original art from various key issues, and a special collection from artist and publisher Denis Kitchen.

This sale of Action Comics No. 1 marks a significant moment in comic book history, showcasing the enduring popularity and value of these iconic characters and stories.
