Environmental advocates in the UAE to receive 10-Year Blue Residency status

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has once again made headlines with the introduction of a groundbreaking new initiative – the “Blue Residency” program. This program, as reported by Khaleej Times, will grant a 10-year visa to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to the field of environmental protection, both within the UAE and on a global scale.

The goal of the “Blue Residency” program is clear – to recognize and incentivize sustainability initiatives and environmental advocacy. This move by the UAE government underscores the country’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Individuals eligible for this long-term residency include members of international environmental organizations, global award winners, and distinguished environmental activists and researchers. They can either apply directly or be nominated by relevant authorities for this prestigious visa.

In a statement made during a Cabinet meeting, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, emphasized the importance of linking the sustainability of the economy to the sustainability of the environment. This sentiment reflects the UAE’s proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges and promoting a greener future.

The introduction of the “Blue Residency” program is part of a larger initiative to mark 2024 as the “Year of Sustainability” in the UAE. This signals a continued commitment to environmental stewardship and underscores the country’s leadership in promoting sustainable practices.

This latest program follows in the footsteps of previous initiatives such as the 10-year “Golden Visa” residency scheme introduced in 2019, which targeted investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, outstanding students, graduates, and humanitarian pioneers. In 2022, the UAE also launched the 5-year “Green Visa” as another longer-term residency option.

The UAE’s proactive stance on sustainability and environmental protection is commendable and sets a positive example for other countries to follow. By recognizing and rewarding individuals who have made significant contributions to the environment, the UAE is not only encouraging innovation and leadership in this critical field but also positioning itself as a global leader in sustainable development.

As the world grapples with pressing environmental challenges, initiatives like the “Blue Residency” program serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration. The UAE’s commitment to sustainability and environmental protection is a testament to its vision for a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.
