EPIQ prepares for expansion in the Middle East with Bahrain as its central hub

EPIQ Machinery, a leading Canadian equipment company, has announced its strategic decision to establish Bahrain as the central hub for its expansion into the Middle East market. The company’s chief operating officer, Naji Elabiad, and Mena regional director, Vivek Kumar, shared their vision for the future of EPIQ in the region.

The choice of Bahrain as the central hub was based on several key factors, including the country’s historical significance as the birthplace of the first primary aluminium production site in the Mena region. Mr. Elabiad emphasized Bahrain’s pioneer and leader status in the industry, making it the ideal strategic location for EPIQ’s operations.

In addition to its historical significance, Bahrain’s economic attractiveness played a significant role in the decision-making process. The cost of business execution in Bahrain is significantly lower compared to other GCC countries, making it an ideal location for foreign investors. The streamlined process for establishing a presence in Bahrain also contributed to the company’s decision.

EPIQ sees immense potential in the Middle Eastern aluminium market, particularly with the industry’s growing focus on sustainability. Mr. Elabiad highlighted the industry’s shift towards sustainability goals, including the substitution of fossil fuel-driven vehicles with electric options and the use of automated guided vehicles and autonomous mobile robots within smelters.

Beyond aluminium, EPIQ also sees potential in other non-ferrous metals like copper and zinc, as well as the paper and pulp business. While the market for these materials may be smaller in the GCC, there is significant potential in North Africa, according to Mr. Elabiad.

EPIQ’s approach emphasizes a global network with localized support, with manufacturing facilities worldwide and final assembly happening near the customer. This ensures optimal efficiency and faster delivery times, with consistent client presence.

The company is committed to innovation and customization, offering custom-engineered solutions and training local personnel to become specialized in their products. Safety is also a top priority for EPIQ, with a focus on developing tools and systems that minimize operator risk.

In terms of sustainability, EPIQ is actively developing solutions like electric vehicles and automated robots, with a significant portion of revenue dedicated to research and development focused on connectivity, IoT 4.0, and artificial intelligence.

Looking ahead, EPIQ plans to significantly expand its presence in Bahrain, with the anticipation of having 40-60 employees within a year and potentially reaching 150 in the long run. The company is partnering with Tamkeen to create a skilled local workforce through training programs and international exposure.
