A delegation from ECOWAS/ERCA recently visited Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire to engage with national stakeholders on competition and consumer protection. Led by Mrs Massandje Toure-Litse, Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, the delegation met with senior officials, business organizations, and consumer groups to discuss ERCA’s mandate and ongoing activities.

During the visit, the ECOWAS mission highlighted the importance of implementing Community rules on competition and consumer protection. They also discussed collaboration with Member States on market studies, data collection, and capacity-building for stakeholders.

ERCA, in partnership with national competition authorities, conducts market studies to better understand sectors, customers, and regulatory environments. The Competition Information System collects and manages information for monitoring competition at the ECOWAS level.

To streamline complaints, ERCA has an Electronic Competition Information System accessible through its website. Cooperation agreements between ECOWAS/ERCA and Member States are being prepared to enhance collaboration in competition matters.

Furthermore, to ensure effective implementation of Community competition policy, ERCA and the UEMOA Competition Directorate have established a Cooperation Agreement. This aims to harmonize actions and promote coherent competition policies within the region.

The visit to Abidjan signifies ECOWAS/ERCA’s commitment to promoting fair competition and protecting consumers in West Africa. Through collaboration and information sharing, they aim to create a level playing field for businesses and safeguard the interests of consumers in the region.
