Eriksen’s fairytale return completes Denmark squad for Euro 2024 as O’Riley is left out

Christian Eriksen, the Danish playmaker who suffered a terrifying heart attack during the Euro 2020 tournament, has been named in Denmark’s squad for Euro 2024 in Germany. The 32-year-old collapsed on the field during a match against Finland last year but has made a remarkable recovery and is ready to represent his country once again on the international stage.

Despite his absence from the squad, English-born midfielder Matt O’Riley was not included in the final 26-man roster announced by coach Kasper Hjulmand. Hjulmand expressed his difficulty in leaving out players but emphasized his satisfaction with the squad he has selected for the upcoming tournament.

Eriksen will be joined by his Manchester United teammate Rasmus Hojlund in Germany, where Denmark will face tough competition in Group C against Slovenia, England, and Serbia. The midfielder is expected to play a key role in the Danish midfield, with Club Brugge winger Andreas Skov Olsen taking over his previous position on the right.

Other notable inclusions in the squad include Mikkel Damsgaard, who stepped up in Eriksen’s absence during Euro 2020, and defender Simon Kjaer, who overcame a late-season injury to make the team. Hjulmand reassured reporters that Kjaer is fully fit and ready to compete at the highest level.

With a strong squad at his disposal, Hjulmand will be hoping that Denmark can build on their impressive performances at Euro 2020 and make a deep run in Euro 2024. The team will be looking to Eriksen for inspiration as they aim to make their mark on the tournament.
