Establishment of a $400,000 Education Abroad Scholarship by the 2024 CAHSS Dean

The College of Arts, Humanities, and the Social Sciences (CAHSS) at UMBC is making studying abroad more accessible for its students with the establishment of the CAHSS Dean’s Education Abroad Scholarship. This scholarship, totaling $100,000 per year for the next four years, aims to help offset the financial costs of studying abroad for undergraduate and graduate students with at least one major in CAHSS.

The inaugural round of scholarships has already been awarded to 24 students, including Joseph Patarini, an environmental science and geography major who will be studying in Morocco and Spain in the summer of 2024. Patarini emphasizes the importance of gaining a diverse global perspective to address environmental issues, stating that studying abroad allows students to deepen their understanding of global interconnectedness and enhance their problem-solving skills.

Another scholarship recipient, Ria Smith, a dance major, will be studying in Italy thanks to the CAHSS Dean’s Education Abroad Scholarship. Smith expresses gratitude for the opportunity to study abroad and acknowledges the value of international exposure in enhancing her undergraduate experience.

The deadline for scholarship applications is September 10, 2024. This initiative by CAHSS demonstrates a commitment to providing students with the opportunity to broaden their academic horizons and gain valuable international experience.
