Ethan Hawke Says He Would ‘Definitely’ Return for a Fourth Before Film on This Condition

Almost three decades ago, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy starred in Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise, a film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Since then, the duo returned to star in two sequels – Before Sunset and Before Midnight. Now, fans are wondering if they can expect Ethan in a fourth Before film.

In an interview with Indiewire, Ethan Hawke revealed that he would ‘definitely’ be open to another installment if director Richard Linklater approached him with a script. “The whole reason those movies worked the way they did is because all three of us were like-minded. It would have to be the three of us all feeling the same impulse,” Ethan said at the New York City premiere of his new directorial Wildcat.

The Before films follow the journey of two strangers, Jesse and Céline, who meet on a train and spend an evening together. The sequels, set in nine-year intervals, explore their evolving relationship, culminating in Before Midnight where the characters are revealed to have married.

Julie Delpy had previously shared in an interview with Variety that they couldn’t come up with a good idea for a fourth movie. “We didn’t fight. We’re not on bad terms. Everyone’s happy…It’s so much drama for nothing. We just didn’t come up with a good idea,” she said.

Ethan Hawke, most recently seen in a short film directed by Pedro Almodovar, remains open to the possibility of reuniting with Julie Delpy and Richard Linklater for another Before film, if the stars align.
