Ethiopia Requests 11 Billion Birr for Emergency Humanitarian Mission Until June 2024

The Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission (EDRMC) has announced a staggering 11 billion birr requirement for humanitarian aid until June 2024. Commissioner Shiferaw Teklemariam outlined the commission’s mission to assist over eight million citizens affected by natural disasters and conflicts within the next three months.

To meet this funding goal, the Ethiopian government is set to contribute 5.1 billion birr, with the remaining 5.9 billion birr expected to come from donors and partner organizations. The United Nations also highlighted the urgent need for $3.2 billion to aid Ethiopians facing severe challenges due to droughts, flooding, and security issues.

Despite these pressing needs, only $287 million has been funded through the Humanitarian Response Plan as of April 23, 2024. A recent pledging event in Geneva garnered $630 million in pledges, falling short of the targeted $1 billion to address the crisis in Ethiopia.

Commissioner Shiferaw stressed the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure the efficient distribution of aid to vulnerable communities nationwide. Ongoing efforts include a risk profile study in over half of the country’s districts to mitigate disasters.

In the previous quarter, 6.6 million individuals received support, with the Tigray region receiving 238 million birr and the Amhara region benefiting from 277 million birr in cash assistance. The commission remains dedicated to providing aid and support to those in need during these challenging times.
