Legendary skateboarder and designer Sal Barbier is making a comeback with Etnies after thirty years. Etnies announced that Barbier will be the creative director of its new SLB by Etnies line, citing his influence as a skateboarder, designer, and creative director as the perfect fit for the role.
Barbier expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “I always designed out of necessity. I have a different point of view than the current marketplace. I am going to unapologetically make a skate shoe, and I need a hardcore skate shoe company to do that. I want to work with Etnies to create something so special for skateboarders that makes the outside world take notice again.”
The collaboration will kick off with the relaunch of the iconic Sal 23 shoe for holiday 2024, followed by the launch of the SLB by Etnies collection in spring 2026. Etnies emphasized that Barbier will focus on style and function from a skateboarder’s perspective in developing the new line.
Etnies global brand director Brian Cook expressed his excitement about Barbier’s return, stating, “Sal’s return to Etnies isn’t just a homecoming; it’s a full circle moment. His passion for skating, design, and aesthetics embodies the very essence of skateboarding; his influence is woven into the fabric of our culture.”
Barbier’s history with Etnies dates back to designing the Sal 23 in 1994 and skating in the brand’s Rap High shoe in the Plan B “Questionable” skateboard film. The partnership with Etnies marks a significant moment for both Barbier and the brand as they aim to create innovative and authentic skate shoes for the future.
