EU investigates Meta for social media addiction in children

The European Commission has launched an in-depth investigation into Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, over concerns that it is not doing enough to protect children from becoming addicted to social media platforms. The probe, under the EU’s Digital Services Act, will focus on whether Meta’s apps are reinforcing harmful online behaviors, such as the “rabbit hole” effect where users get drawn deeper into online feeds and topics.

EU investigators will also examine whether Meta is providing appropriate age-verification tools to prevent children from accessing inappropriate content. If found in violation of the DSA, Meta could face fines of up to 6% of its global annual turnover, or even bans in the single market for repeat offenses.

Thierry Breton, the commissioner for internal market, expressed skepticism about Meta’s compliance with the DSA obligations to protect the physical and mental health of young Europeans on its platforms. He emphasized the EU’s commitment to safeguarding children and ensuring a high level of privacy, safety, and security for minors online.

This is the second probe into Meta under the DSA, following a previous investigation into the company’s handling of disinformation from Russia and other countries. Brussels is particularly concerned about the moderation of content that could influence upcoming elections across Europe.

Meta has defended its moderation practices and stated that it has systems in place to combat the spread of disinformation on its platforms. The outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for Meta and its operations in the EU.
