EU promises increased support for Syrian refugees amidst lack of progress towards a solution

The tense situation in southern Lebanon escalated on Monday when an Israeli strike outside a hospital in Bint Jbeil resulted in the death of one person and injuries to fifteen others. The victim, Ali Wizani, was on a motorcycle heading for medical tests when the attack occurred. Among the injured were seven civilians and eight healthcare workers, including the hospital security guard Hassan Jouni, who underwent surgery for severe injuries.

The Israeli military targeted the vicinity of the hospital with a combat drone during a peak time when patients were arriving for treatment. This marked the first time since the hostilities began in southern Lebanon that a hospital was targeted by Israeli forces. The Lebanese Ministry of Health condemned the attack, calling it a “full-fledged war crime” and a violation of international laws protecting healthcare facilities and workers.

Dr. Mohammed Sleiman, the director of Salah Ghandour Hospital, described the chaos that ensued after the attack. Despite the damage caused by the shelling, the hospital staff quickly evacuated patients from the affected areas and continued to provide medical care to those in need. Dr. Sleiman emphasized the hospital’s humanitarian role in serving the community, even in the face of ongoing conflict.

In response to the Israeli assault on the hospital, Hezbollah retaliated by targeting and destroying Israeli spy equipment in the area. This retaliation led to further clashes between the two sides, with Hezbollah launching rockets at Israeli settlements and targeting enemy soldiers in border areas. The Israeli military also conducted airstrikes on Hezbollah positions, resulting in casualties on both sides.

The situation in southern Lebanon remains volatile, with border villages facing continuous Israeli bombardment. The Israeli army has increased its readiness for war, conducting exercises simulating ground maneuvers in Lebanon. Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati discussed the security situation with the commander of UNIFIL forces, emphasizing the need for coordination between UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army to maintain peace and stability in the region.
