EU to strengthen sanctions against Iran following attack on Israel

The European Union has decided to escalate sanctions on Iranian producers of drones and missiles in response to Iran’s recent attack on Israel. European Council President Charles Michel emphasized the importance of isolating Iran, stating that the EU must do everything possible to achieve this goal.

The EU’s decision to expand sanctions comes after Iran launched an unprecedented assault on Israel, involving over 300 missiles and drones fired from multiple countries, including Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. Most of the projectiles were intercepted by Israel and its allies.

Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated following an alleged Israeli airstrike on Iran’s consulate in Syria, which resulted in the death of 13 individuals. While Israel has refrained from a direct military response, it has called on its allies to sanction Iran’s missile program and designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

World leaders have urged restraint to prevent further escalation in the Middle East. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the need for de-escalation and encouraged Israel to strengthen its position in the region without resorting to a massive attack.

The United States is also considering imposing new penalties on Iran, with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen mentioning the possibility of targeting Iran’s oil exports to disrupt terrorist financing. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan indicated that Iran’s missile and drone program, as well as the IRGC and the Iranian defense ministry, would be subject to sanctions.

The EU already has existing sanctions against Iran for various reasons, including human rights abuses, nuclear proliferation activities, and military support for Russia. The decision to expand sanctions reflects the international community’s efforts to address Iran’s aggressive actions and prevent further conflict in the region.
