As the European elections draw near, scientists from across the European Union are coming together to demand increased funding for research and development. The 27 EU science academies have issued a statement calling for at least 3% of gross domestic product (GDP) to be allocated to research and education to ensure the continent remains competitive on the global stage.
Currently, the EU falls short of this target, with only 2.27% of GDP being spent on research. This puts the EU at a clear disadvantage compared to countries like South Korea, the United States, and Japan, which invest significantly more in research and development.
The lack of adequate funding not only hinders scientific progress but also leaves the EU ill-prepared to tackle complex challenges and emergencies. With increasing competition between countries, it is crucial for the EU to prioritize investment in research and innovation to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving world.
Despite the importance of science and research, the scientific community feels neglected in the European election campaign. Only two European parties have advocated for increased funding for research and development, with the European People’s Party proposing a combined investment of 4% of GDP and The European Left suggesting 7% of the EU’s GDP be reserved for education, research, and innovation.
Scientists are calling on Member States and EU institutions to prioritize the use of scientific knowledge in policy-making and to ensure safe and stable working conditions for researchers and students. It is essential for European politicians to recognize the crucial role of science in shaping the future of the continent and to take concrete steps to support research and innovation.
