Vaughan Gething, the First Minister of Wales, made history as the first Black head of government in Europe when he took office in March. Despite this milestone, Gething believes that UK society has become more overtly racist than a decade ago.
In a recent interview with Reuters, Gething shared that he faced a stream of racist messages on social media questioning his right to be in office. The Zambian-born leader has experienced offensive and racist material directed at him since assuming his post, but he tries not to dwell on it.
While the UK has seen an increase in ethnic minorities reaching top political positions, Gething warns against viewing this progress as a sign of successful multiculturalism. He believes that recent years have seen a resurgence of racism, with hate crimes on the rise and racial inequalities deepening.
Despite the diversity in political leadership, racial inequality persists in Britain, with minorities more likely to live in poverty compared to their white counterparts. Gething aims to address these issues by growing the economy, particularly in the renewable energy sector, and reviewing the “anti-racist Wales action plan.”
As the upcoming election approaches, Gething remains focused on creating a more inclusive and equitable society. While his election as First Minister is a step in the right direction, he acknowledges that true progress will require ongoing efforts to combat racism and promote equality for all.
